The courtroom fell silent as a collective sigh of relief echoed through the halls of justice. After a day of emotional rallies and heart-wrenching testimony, the fate of the former deputy who took the life of Sonya Massey has finally been decided. WATCH the historic moment the maximum sentence was delivered and hear the community’s powerful reaction to a system that refused to look away.
SPRINGFIELD, IL — On January 29, 2026, at 9 a.m., the sentencing proceeding for Sean Grayson, the ex-Sangamon County Sheriff Deputy found guilty of the murder of Sonya Massey, commenced.
This event drew an assembly of local citizens to demonstrate for Sonya Massey. Protesters displayed placards stating, “Black Lives Matter” and “justice for Sonya Massey”. The demonstrating groups also voiced numerous slogans. Among the sentiments expressed was how law enforcement frequently escapes accountability for the very offenses they are intended to prevent. Participants noted that officers often violate the same statutes they are meant to uphold and remain unpenalized or without appropriate retribution.
Today, at roughly 10:25 a.m., suitable justice was delivered to Grayson, providing the demonstrating assembly and Sonya Massey’s relatives with the resolution they had been seeking.
“No Justice, No Peace” was the cry of one attendee as another demonstrator beat a drum. A separate group of six individuals sang “None of us are free until all of us are free”. Naturally, various participants of the rally repeated Massey’s name after a leader with a megaphone yelled, “Say her name!”.
Once the sentence was handed down, formal remarks were issued by State Senator Doris Turner, Sangamon County Sheriff Paula Crouch, and representative members of the Massey Commission.
Senator Turner remarked, “Nothing will restore Sonya. Today’s judgment does not alter the reality that Sean Grayson extinguished an innocent life. I stand with the Massey relatives and my neighborhood as we persist in grieving the unfair loss of Sonya. Since Sonya’s slaying, I’ve been dedicated to implementing the essential reforms to guarantee our community maintains faith in those who protect and serve, and I’m committed to pursuing this effort now more than ever”.
The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Department published Sheriff Crouch’s statement on their Facebook Page. Crouch declared, “Sonya Massey’s homicide should never have occurred. Today, the individual at fault has been held responsible via the maximum penalty permitted under the law. I wish to thank the Court and the State’s Attorney’s Office. We recognize that no punishment can reverse the loss experienced by the Massey family or the distress felt throughout our community. The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office will persist in improving training and supervision and ensuring that every request for assistance is managed with care, expertise, and reverence for human life”.
Included in The Massey Commission’s announcement are remarks made for the commission, alongside testimonials from Massey’s family members. A declaration from the Massey Commission noted that as the sentence was pronounced, the courtroom released a collective breath and there were shared sighs of relief. Not because justice had been perfectly attained, but because, for once, the institution did not avert its gaze. For once, the destruction of a Black woman’s life by law enforcement was not ignored, postponed, or devalued.

Sonya Massey’s cousin, Sontae Massey, expressed, “Sonya’s passing will haunt me for the remainder of my life. It serves as an enduring reminder of what occurs when authority is wielded without compassion, when a life is viewed as expendable. One atrocious act broke an entire family—and that harm does not diminish with time”. Additionally, Sonya’s mother reminded Grayson during her Victim Statement of what Sonya’s final words comprised: “Sean Grayson, I rebuke you in the name of Jesus”.
